Federal Transportation Funding Programs

There are a variety of Federal transportation funding sources authorized in the latest Transportation Act: Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU); each with its own set of requirements. Any and all projects and programs inside the Metropolitan Planning Area (Clark and Floyd counties in Indiana, and Bullitt, Jefferson and Oldham counties in Kentucky) that anticipate using Federal transportation funds must first be included in the long-range transportation plan (Horizon 2030) and the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).  The majority of Federal funding is used at the states' discretion; however, the Transportation Policy Committee is responsible for approving the Plan and TIP before the funds can be utilized.
