The Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) is more than simply a list of unrelated projects. Through technical analysis, public involvement, and policy review, the Transportation Policy Committee (TPC) has clearly stated what they expect from the MTP in terms of projects, how they interact, and the impacts they will have on the community. This page includes links to resources help project sponsors understand the direction the TPC has chosen. The diverse landscape and variety of needs and wants require a dynamic approach that respects sub-area distinctions within a regional context. The foundation the TPC has created for updating the MTP provides for complimentary rather than contradictory transportation based improvements within and between smaller areas and the greater region.

An overview of TPC action to date reflects the following emphasis points:

The link between land use and transportation – Proposed project coordination with existing and planned land use
Safety – Proposed projects addressing clearly identified or anticipated safety issues
Less Congestion – Proposed projects improving traffic flow on roads and through intersections and interchanges
Emphasis on reducing SOV demand – Looking for alternatives to adding capacity to reduce congestion (intersection improvements, reversible lanes, increased transit, sidewalks, bicycle amenities, intersection signal timing, etc.).
Modal choices for commuter trips – Proposed projects improving modal options within the context of a larger project or as a stand alone project
