Safe Routes to School

In 1969, statistics show that approximately half of all school children walked or bicycled to school. Today, less than 15% of students get to school by walking or biking. With the adoption of SAFETEA-LU in 2005, Safe-Routes to School became one of the latest Federal transportation funding categories to support projects and programs built specifically for making it easier to walk or bike to school.

The purpose of the Federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program is to address traffic issues around schools, making it easier for children to become more active in their day-to-day routines, and improving the overall health of a community. At its heart, the SRTS Program empowers communities to make walking and bicycling to school a safe and routine activity once again.

Funding is available for projects and programs within two miles of an elementary or middle school (grades 1-8) with the express purpose of making it easier to bike and/or walk to school.
